ET phones Earth: Unexplained signals from deep space could be PROOF of intelligent alien life

A team of scientists have captured 15 unexplained signals from outer space - and they can't rule out that it came from an alien civilisation.

The signals came from a tiny galaxy roughly three billion light years from Earth. They were delivered in an intense burst and were all picked up within the space of five hours.

"Bursts from this source have never been seen at this high a frequency," commented Andrew Siemion, the director of Breakthrough Listen, an initiative based at the University of California, Berkeley, which detected the signals.

These so-called fast radio bursts (FRB) have been dubbed FRB 121102 and come from an area of space where signals have previously been detected. The above image shows the recordings of 14 of the bursts made by the team.

One such explanation could be that rotating neutron stars are sending out hugely powerful bursts of energy that are travelling across the cosmos to be intercepted by us.

Alternatively, experts have proposed that an alien civilisation may be using targeted laser bursts to power spacecraft. NASA is looking at a similar method in order to send tiny crafts to Proxima Centauri, our nearest star.

“As well as confirming that the source is in a newly active state, the high resolution of the data obtained by the Listen instrument will allow measurement of the properties of these mysterious bursts at a higher precision than ever possible before,” said Breakthrough Listen postdoctoral researcher Vishal Gajjar, who discovered the increased activity.

The scientists at Breakthrough Listen have alerted the rest of the astronomical community and turned over their findings in the hope that others could help find answers.
